Updated: Sep 27

My Ultracycling Race Setup

This is my lightweight race setup for ultra-distance bikepacking events and races. Whether you're planning to cycle across continents, countries, or just go on a bikepacking trip, here are some tips about bike setup, gear, and everything inside my bags that you can use.

Bike Setup for Ultra-Distance Races

For my ultra-cycling races, I use the Fara Allroad. It is an endurance bike with a relaxed geometry, making it very comfortable for long rides.

Bike Specifications

  • Tires: 32 mm Continental Gran Pix 5000 AS

  • Wheels: Bike Ahead Composites six-spoke wheels

  • Tire SetupTubeless using Silca Sealant

  • Group Set : SRAM Red AXS Wireless, 2x, 46/33 x 10/36

Bikepacking Bags

Onto the bags, I use the Apidura race series. These include:

  • Saddle Bag (5L)

  • Musette

  • Top Tube Bag (1L)

  • Fara Frame Bag with magnetic attachment

The frame bag is one of my favourites because it attaches with magnets, eliminating the need for straps and protecting tape.

Handlebars and Cockpit

The cockpit is crucial for comfort and aerodynamics. I use the Profile Design DVR aero handlebar with Silca bar tape. I also have Deda one-piece carbon aero bars, providing excellent support for my forearms and sides.

For added comfort on bumpy roads, I use the Redshift suspension stem. My Garmin solar computer is mounted using a Silca 3D printed titanium mount.

Other essential gear includes my Kask Elemento helmet with 3D printed padding and Quoc Gran Tourer XC shoes with two BOA dials. These shoes are paired with Shimano XTR pedals, which are great for both road and gravel riding.

Hydration and nutrition are vital for ultra-distance races. I use Silca titanium bottle cages, which are rock-solid and easy to use with frame bags. My bottles are from Precision Fuel and Hydration, designed to hold a 300-gram gel for quick energy intake.

Weighing the Setup

Finally, the moment of truth: the total weight of my setup is 11.6 kilograms.
